Preamps

We're looking for preamps that offer a transparent sound up to a certain volume, then add a subtle warmth or grit when you push them - that fat midrange honk that can make an acoustic guitar or vocal really cut through. Avoid interfaces with brittle, ice-picky highs.
Latency
This is the lag between playing a note and hearing it back. For intermediate players, anything above 10ms is noticeable and frustrating, especially when practicing or tracking with amp sims. Lower latency requires a faster computer and good drivers, which we'll factor in.
Connectivity

Questions
What's the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 interfaces?
USB 3.0 offers faster transfer speeds, which can be helpful for higher sample rates and more simultaneous tracks, but most intermediate setups won't saturate a USB 2.0 interface. It's more future-proofing than a necessity.
How important are the preamps really?
Hugely important. They're the first stage of your recording chain. Bad preamps = bad sound, no amount of EQ or compression can fix it. Listen for clarity and a little bit of character - avoid harshness.
What's 'phantom power' and do I need it?
Phantom power (48V) is what powers condenser microphones. If you're using a condenser mic, you'll need an interface with phantom power. Dynamic mics don't need it.
My interface has latency, even with low buffer sizes. What's going on?
Your computer's CPU might be struggling. Close unnecessary programs, increase RAM, or consider upgrading your processor. Driver conflicts can also cause latency - make sure you have the latest drivers.
Can I use any microphone with any interface?
Technically, yes, but impedance matching is important. Most interfaces have a 'mic' input that's designed for low-impedance mics. Using a high-impedance microphone might result in a weaker or colored signal.
