A passive pickup is a magnet and a coil. An active one adds a small preamp that runs on a battery. At Thomann, about one electric guitar in ten is active, mostly metal guitars with EMG or Fishman Fluence pickups, but more than half of the basses are. A quiet start to November: 28 listings joined Thomann's catalog between November 1 and 3, and 96 left. The new arrivals range from a $77 overdrive pedal to a Steinway grand that was built in 1939 and rebuilt in Thomann's own workshop.

Between October 31 and November 3, 315 prices fell at Thomann and 49 went up. 259 of the drops took a price to its lowest since August. The biggest single move came from Ultimate Ears, which cut almost its whole custom line on the same night.
