A column PA and a pair of speakers on stands both fill a room with sound, but they do it differently. A column is a subwoofer with a tall, narrow array of small drivers on top. A "traditional" PA is two full-range boxes, usually with a 12-inch woofer and a horn, on tripod stands, with a subwoofer added when you need more bass.
| Column PA | Speakers on stands | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Two or three pieces, plugged together, no cables | Two speakers, two stands, cables, maybe a mixer |
| Coverage | Wide side to side, tight up and down | Depends on the horn, more reflections off walls and ceiling |
| Loudness for the money | Lower | Higher |
| Stereo | Needs two systems | Built in |
| Weight to carry | Usually one heavy subwoofer | Two heavier boxes and stands |
| Median price at Thomann | $1,413 per system | $658 per speaker |
What a column does better
Its tall array spreads sound wide horizontally but keeps it narrow vertically. Less sound hits the ceiling and the floor, so a reverberant room stays clearer and speech is easier to understand. Because the array sits above head height, the front row isn't blasted while the back row strains. And you set it up alone, in a couple of minutes.
Electro-Voice EVOLVE 30M G2, $1,676
A 10-inch subwoofer, six 2.8-inch drivers and a built-in mixer, listed at 125 dB maximum SPL. #20 of 45 DJ PA sets.
To see whether one column is enough for your venue, draw it in our EVOLVE G2 stage plot: it maps the level across the floor for one or two columns.
What speakers on stands do better
Loudness per dollar. Two JBL EON712s cost about $1,150 together and Thomann lists 127 dB maximum for each; a pair of Yamaha DBR12 costs about $1,030 and lists 131 dB each. A column at the same money lists around 123 to 125 dB. For a loud band or a DJ set in a bigger room, a pair on stands, later with a subwoofer, goes further.
JBL EON712, $577
A 12-inch active speaker with 650 W RMS and a maximum of 127 dB. #2 of 255 active full-range PA speakers.
RCF's ART 912-A at $709 lists 130 dB and is one of the highest-ranked active speakers in our index.
Which one for what
- Singer-songwriter, duo, speeches, weddings in a hall: column. Even coverage and quick setup matter more than the last few decibels.
- Restaurant or bar gigs where you set up in a corner: column.
- Loud band or DJ set: speakers on stands, plus a subwoofer.
- Outdoor events: speakers on stands, or a pair of the bigger columns.
- You also need monitors on stage: speakers; a pair can double as wedges later.
Maximum SPL figures are measured differently by each brand, so treat gaps of a few decibels with care. For the full budget, including mixers and microphones, see How much does a PA system cost?
