On November 3, 2026, Thomann had 85 stage pianos in stock and 180 home digital pianos: 124 in cabinets, 49 compact ones and 7 digital grands.
| Kind | Models | Median price | From | Median weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stage piano | 85 | $1,906 | $178 | 16 kg |
| Compact digital piano | 49 | $892 | $122 | 35 kg |
| Digital piano in a cabinet | 124 | $1,894 | $264 | 57 kg |
| Digital grand | 7 | $5,584 | $2,129 | 106 kg |
The medians of stage pianos and cabinet pianos are almost the same, about $1,900. You aren't paying for a better or worse piano, you are choosing a body.
What a stage piano is
A stage piano is just the keyboard: no stand, often no speakers, light enough for one person to carry, with balanced outputs for a PA and controls you can reach mid-song. Most add electric pianos, organs and pads, because on a gig a keyboard player needs them.
Roland RD-88 EX, $1,383
88 weighted PHA-4 keys, Roland's SuperNATURAL acoustic and electric pianos, more than 3,000 sounds in three parts and 400 scenes for a set list, at a weight one person carries easily. #23 of 71 stage pianos.
Thomann's stage piano category also includes portable pianos with small speakers, built for home and practice, which is why it starts so low. Yamaha's P-45 costs $369, Roland's FP-10 $446.
What a home digital piano is
A home digital piano stands on its own cabinet, with three pedals in a fixed pedal unit, speakers aimed at the player, a lid and a music rest. It looks and works like a small upright, and it isn't meant to move.
Casio AP-S200, $959
88 weighted hammer-action keys, 19 sounds and a slim cabinet with three pedals, for $963. It is number one of 49 home digital pianos in our ranking. #1 of 51 general digital pianos.
Kawai's CN-201 at $1,390 is number two, with Kawai's Responsive Hammer III action and Bluetooth.
The one in between
Yamaha P-225, $635
A portable piano with speakers, Yamaha's GHC weighted keys and the CFX grand sample, at $638. Add a stand and a three-pedal unit and it becomes a home piano; take it alone and it goes to rehearsal. #5 of 71 stage pianos.
Compact digital pianos, at a median $892 and 35 kg, are this idea with a lighter cabinet.
Which one?
- You play only at home, in one room: a digital piano in a cabinet. It sounds fuller through its own speakers and looks like furniture.
- You play in a band or at gigs: a stage piano, from about $1,400 for a serious one, played through a PA or a keyboard amp.
- You want both, on a budget: a portable with speakers like the P-225 or FP-10, plus a stand and a pedal unit.
What matters most in either is the keyboard action, so if you can, try the keys before you choose the body.
