A new digital piano costs from about $250 to more than $21,000, but most people should look between $340 and $2,000. Of the 318 digital pianos Thomann had in stock in October 2026, half cost less than $1,349, 112 cost less than $1,000, and only 26 cost more than $5,000.
The number that matters most isn't the price, it's the keyboard. A real piano has 88 keys that feel heavier in the bass than in the treble, and the cheapest instruments that copy that feel start at around $340. Below that line the keys are lighter, and often there are only 61 or 76 of them: fine for fun, not for learning to play the piano.
How much does a digital piano cost for a beginner?
For a beginner who wants to learn properly, the budget is $340 to $700: that buys 88 weighted keys with a hammer action, a pedal input and headphones out for quiet practice. Three models sit at the bottom of that range.
Casio CDP-S110 BK, $336
One of the two cheapest digital pianos in our index with 88 keys and a graded hammer action (Casio's Scaled Hammer Action II; the other is Thomann's own SP-2000), plus ten sounds, a metronome and two 8-watt speakers. #4 of 25 compact digital pianos in our ranking.
Kawai ES-60, $399
Kawai's entry portable piano with 88 weighted hammer-action keys, 17 sounds and 192-note polyphony, so long sustained chords don't cut off. Kawai also builds acoustic pianos, and its actions have a good reputation. #6 of 48 general digital pianos.
Casio CDP-S160 BK, $595
The step up from the CDP-S110, with a MIDI recorder, USB to connect to a computer and a duet mode that splits the keyboard for a teacher and a student. It ranks near the top of our compact pianos: #1 of 25 compact digital pianos.
Digital piano prices by type
Thomann sorts its digital pianos into three groups, and they differ in price more than in sound.
| Type | Models | Cheapest | Median | Most expensive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact (portable) | 106 | $123 | $888 | $2,023 |
| Home (with cabinet) | 200 | $257 | $1,631 | $19,817 |
| Digital grand | 12 | $2,248 | $4,534 | $21,368 |
Prices are Thomann's as of October 18, 2026. A compact piano sits on a stand or a table and can be carried to a lesson; a home piano comes in a cabinet with three pedals and looks like furniture; a digital grand copies the shape of a grand piano.
What you get for more money
Between $700 and $2,000 the money goes into three things: a better key action, better speakers and a cabinet with three real pedals.
Kawai ES-120 B, $674
A portable piano with Kawai's Responsive Hammer Compact action, 25 sounds, 100 drum rhythms and a recorder, still light enough to move. #6 of 48 general digital pianos.
Casio AP-S200 BN, $967
A home piano in a cabinet with 88 weighted keys, 19 sounds, MIDI and audio recording to a USB stick, at a price many compact pianos cost. One of the highest-ranked digital pianos in our index: #1 of 48 general digital pianos.
Korg C1 Air BK Set, $1,068
A slim home piano with Korg's RH3 hammer action, three pedals and a two-track recorder, sold as a set. #2 of 25 compact digital pianos.
Kawai CN-201 B, $1,394
A home piano with Kawai's Responsive Hammer III action, an OLED display and a lesson function, for families who want the piano to look like a piano. #2 of 48 general digital pianos.
Yamaha P-525 B, $1,784
The point where the keys become wooden: Yamaha's GrandTouch-S action with escapement and synthetic ivory tops, plus the CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano sounds. For a pianist who plays every day. #7 of 25 compact digital pianos.
How much does a Yamaha digital piano cost?
Yamaha has the widest range at Thomann, 105 digital pianos, and also the highest median price among the big brands.
| Brand | Models | Cheapest | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamaha | 105 | $208 | $1,997 |
| Kawai | 66 | $399 | $1,867 |
| Casio | 58 | $257 | $832 |
| Thomann | 40 | $223 | $652 |
| Korg | 22 | $854 | $1,012 |
Casio and Thomann's own brand cost about half as much as Yamaha and Kawai at the median, and in our rankings the cheaper brands hold up well: when we checked, half of the ten highest-ranked digital pianos were Casios.
The most expensive digital pianos
At the top of the catalog, digital pianos stop competing with keyboards and start competing with acoustic grands.
Yamaha N-3X Avant Grand, $21,368
A digital grand in a polished ebony case with weighted wooden keys and ivory-like tops, three pedals and a tactile resonance system that passes vibration to the keys, as on a real grand. The most expensive digital piano Thomann sells. #4 of 5 digital grand pianos.
Questions
How much should I spend on a digital piano for a beginner?
Around $340 to $700 for 88 weighted keys. The Casio CDP-S110 costs $336 and the Kawai ES-60 costs $399.
Is a $300 digital piano good enough?
For a beginner, yes, as long as it has 88 weighted keys. Many cheaper instruments called digital pianos have 61 or 76 keys, or 88 light ones without a hammer action, and the habits you build on those don't transfer well to a real piano.
Why are some digital pianos so expensive?
Wooden keys with escapement, larger speaker systems, sampled concert grands and a cabinet built like furniture. Above $2,000 you pay mostly for how close the keyboard feels to an acoustic piano.
What is the difference between a digital piano and a keyboard?
A digital piano is built to replace a piano: 88 weighted keys, few sounds, a pedal. A keyboard has lighter keys, usually 61, and hundreds of sounds and rhythms. Keyboards are cheaper, digital pianos are better for learning piano.
How we measured. We took every digital piano Thomann listed as in stock on October 18, 2026, 318 in total, many of them color versions of the same model, and grouped them by Thomann's own categories. Prices are converted from euros at the European Central Bank rate. The products in this guide show today's price and their current place in our rankings, both updated every night; the tables are fixed to October 18.
