What's the difference between a low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass filter?

Low-pass cuts highs, high-pass cuts lows, and band-pass lets a narrow range of frequencies through. Most modules offer a low-pass as a starting point, with options for band-pass or high-pass modes.

Can I use these filters with non-modular synths?
