How to choose the best active subwoofers
Driver Size & Construction
Bigger ain't always better, but a properly braced 12" or 15" driver is gonna give you more headroom than a smaller, cheaper one. Look for polypropylene or composite cones - they're generally more durable for gigging.
Amplifier Power & Class
You want enough clean power to handle your application. Class D amps are common in this price range for efficiency, but sometimes you can hear a slight "digital" edge - listen for it. Clipping is the enemy.
Frequency Response & Extension
'Frequency response' is meaningless without context. What we care about is how low it actually goes. A sub claiming 30Hz might not feel like 30Hz in a real-world setting. Look for extension down to at least 45-50Hz for decent fullness.
DSP & Protection
Basic EQ and high-pass filters are a must. Limiter circuits are essential to prevent damage when you're pushing the sub. Some even have presets for different applications - a nice bonus, but don't rely on them exclusively.
Build Quality & Portability
Gigs aren't done in a sterile studio. You need something that can withstand the bumps and bruises of transport. Look for a decent plywood cabinet and a manageable weight - lugging a boat anchor around sucks.

Absolutely. You won't get the absolute best, but there are solid options that'll improve your low-end significantly. Just manage your expectations.
What's the difference between a 12" and a 15" subwoofer?
Generally, a 15" sub will have a bit more low-end extension and headroom, but it will also be heavier and take up more space. A 12" sub is often a better compromise for portability.
What does 'high-pass filter' do?
