Between October 18 and 23, the price of every current Yamaha Arius digital piano at Thomann fell: 24 listings across the YDP-146, YDP-S36, YDP-166 and YDP-S56, in every finish and every set with a bench and headphones. For all 24 it is the lowest price we have recorded since August. Only the older YDP-S55, still listed at €1,059, stayed put.
The new Arius prices
| Model | Keyboard | Was | Now |
|---|---|---|---|
| YDP-146 | GHS | €1,049 | $1,118 (€998) |
| YDP-S36, slim cabinet | GHS | €1,079 | $1,118 (€998) |
| YDP-166 | GrandTouch-E | €1,399 | $1,456 (€1,299) |
| YDP-S56, slim cabinet | GrandTouch-E | €1,399 | $1,456 (€1,299) |
The sets with bench and headphones fell by the same amounts and now cost €80 more than the piano alone.
Which Arius to pick
The step that matters is the keyboard. The YDP-146 and the slimmer YDP-S36 use Yamaha's GHS (Graded Hammer Standard) action, the YDP-166 and YDP-S56 the GrandTouch-E action with synthetic ebony and ivory keytops. All four play Yamaha's CFX concert grand sample. The "S" models have a flat lid that closes over the keys, the others a classic cabinet.
Yamaha YDP-S36 Arius, $1,117
The cheaper action in the slim cabinet, now the same price as the YDP-146. #14 of 25 compact digital pianos.
Yamaha YDP-166 Arius, $1,454
The successor to the YDP-165, with the better GrandTouch-E keys. #12 of 25 compact digital pianos.
The Roland FP-30X went the other way
Roland FP-30X, $759
The portable FP-30X rose from €604 to €678, and its bundles with stand, bag or case 8 to 10%. It is still much cheaper than any Arius, but it is a portable piano: no cabinet, a single pedal in the box and a stand sold separately. #6 of 25 compact digital pianos.
Questions
Is now a good time to buy a Yamaha Arius?
By our records, yes: these are the lowest Arius prices since August, and they fell together, which looks like a price change rather than a flash sale. Prices before Christmas can still move either way.
GHS or GrandTouch-E?
For a beginner who mainly practices, GHS is fine. If you play classical repertoire or want the keys closest to an acoustic, the GrandTouch-E models are worth the extra €300. More on what the money buys in how much a digital piano costs.
