A new acoustic drum set costs from about $300 for a complete beginner kit to more than $13,000 for a premium one, and the median complete kit at Thomann costs $1,012. That's the short answer. The longer one is that "drum set" means three different things in a store, and the cheapest-looking option is often the one that needs the most extra money.
We priced every acoustic kit Thomann had in stock in October 2026: 386 complete drum sets, 573 shell packs and 168 premium kits, plus the cymbal sets you need to finish a shell pack.
How much does a drum set cost for beginners?
A beginner should look for a complete set, with drums, stands, a pedal, a throne and cymbals in one box. Those start at around $300, and the median complete kit costs $1,012. Three kits show the range.
Startone Star Drum Set Standard -BK, $303
The cheapest full-size complete kit we track: five drums with a 22" bass drum, double-braced stands, a throne, a pedal and a brass 13" hi-hat and 15" crash/ride. Brass cymbals sound harsh next to bronze ones, so they're usually the first thing to upgrade. #228 of 234 acoustic drumkits.
Pearl Roadshow 18" Matte Red, $854
A complete Pearl kit with a compact 18" bass drum, double-braced hardware, a throne and Sabian Solar cymbals, plus sticks. One of the highest-ranked complete kits in our index: #3 of 234 acoustic drumkits.
Sonor AQX Stage Set BOS, $1,041
Sonor's entry kit with poplar shells, a 22" bass drum and a five-piece AQX hardware set. It led our complete-kit ranking when we checked: #2 of 234 acoustic drumkits.
Complete kit, shell pack or premium kit?
Here's where the prices come from. A complete kit is ready to play. A shell pack is only the drums: you add stands, a bass drum pedal, a throne and cymbals. Premium kits are usually shell packs too, just with better wood and hardware.
| What you buy | Models | Cheapest | Median | Most expensive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complete drum set | 386 | $125 | $1,012 | $2,137 |
| Shell pack | 573 | $313 | $1,799 | $9,000 |
| Premium kit | 168 | $3,374 | $5,625 | $13,501 |
| Cymbal set | 178 | $111 | $816 | $2,361 |
Prices are Thomann's as of October 18, 2026. The cheapest prices in the first row are children's kits; the cheapest full-size complete kit costs about $300.
What a shell pack really costs
A shell pack looks cheaper than a complete kit with better drums, and it is, until you add up the rest. Take a popular mid-range shell set, add a cymbal set and a bass drum pedal at the median price ($223), and you're past the price of most complete kits before you've bought stands and a throne.
Tama Club Jam Flyer -CPM, $517
A small four-piece shell pack with a 14" bass drum, built for small rooms and gigs where you carry everything yourself. One of the highest-ranked shell packs under $1,000 we track: #2 of 252 drum shell sets.
Yamaha Stage Custom Standard -HA, $898
Birch shells in a lacquer finish, Yamaha's tom mount and a 22" bass drum: the classic step-up kit for a drummer who outgrows a beginner set. Shells only, so plan for hardware and cymbals. #26 of 252 drum shell sets.
Cymbals: the other half of the bill
Cymbals often cost as much as the drums. A starter cymbal set fits under $200; a good bronze set costs $700 to $1,500.
Meinl HCS1314+10S Cymbal Set, $163
A beginner set with a 13" hi-hat, a 14" crash and a 10" splash, plus a pair of sticks. A clear upgrade over the brass cymbals that come with most cheap kits. #46 of 162 cymbal sets.
Zildjian S Series Dark Cymbal Pack, $820
B12 bronze hi-hats, crash and ride with a dark, slightly dry sound, for a drummer who plays every week. #3 of 162 cymbal sets.
How much does a professional drum set cost?
Most premium kits at Thomann cost between $4,000 and $8,000 for the shells alone; only six cost more than $10,000.
Mapex Black Panther Cherry Bomb - HW, $4,161
A solid cherrywood shell set with Remo heads and Mapex's SONIClear bearing edges, and the highest-ranked premium kit in our index when we checked: #1 of 126 premium drum kits.
Gretsch Drums USA Custom 18 Silver Sparkle, $5,062
Handmade maple shells with Gretsch's Silver Sealer finish inside, in a compact jazz configuration with an 18" bass drum. #6 of 126 premium drum kits.

Millenium Focus Junior Drum Set Black, $201
A bigger junior kit for children from 4 to 7 years, with five drums, single-braced stands, a throne and brass cymbals. #50 of 234 acoustic drumkits.
Questions
How much is a good drum set for a beginner?
Between $300 and $1,100 for a complete kit. The Startone Star costs $303 and the Pearl Roadshow, with Sabian cymbals, costs $854.
Is a $300 drum set worth it?
For learning, yes: it has everything you need to start. Expect to replace the brass cymbals within a year or two if you keep playing.
Are electronic drums cheaper than acoustic drums?
Not on average. The median electronic kit at Thomann costs about $2,200, more than twice the median complete acoustic kit. Entry electronic kits do start at about $200, and they're much quieter at home.
What else do you need besides a drum set?
With a complete kit, only sticks and hearing protection. With a shell pack, you also need a hi-hat stand, a snare stand, cymbal stands, a bass drum pedal, a throne and cymbals.
