Questions

What's the difference between a 'vintage' compressor and a modern one?

Vintage units often have a distinct sonic character - think tube warmth, transformer saturation - that's hard to replicate perfectly digitally. Modern units tend to be cleaner, more transparent, and offer more precise control, but can sometimes lack that 'mojo.'

How important is sidechain filtering?

Crucial. Without it, your sidechain compression can muddy the low-end or create unwanted artifacts. A high-pass filter on the sidechain input is your friend, especially when ducking bass or kick drum under a vocal.

I'm overwhelmed by all the attack/release time options. Where do I start?

Start slow. Listen carefully to how the attack affects transient impact and the release affects the 'breathing' of the signal. Experiment with short attack/fast release for punchy drums, and longer attack/slow release for smoother vocals.

Are hardware compressors always better than plugins?
