This Epiphone Viola Bass is a fantastic gateway to that classic Beatles sound and offers a surprisingly playable experience. Its short scale and comfortable neck make it ideal for students or those seeking a vintage vibe without the premium price tag. While not a sonic chameleon, it nails the 60s aesthetic beautifully.

Product Description

Epiphone Viola Bass, Viola bass guitar

Short-scale basses may have become a bit outdated, but if you love the sounds of the 60s, you'll have a hard job getting around avoiding them.

For the Epiphone Viola Bass, the name comes from its violin-like body shape, and its prototype, the legendary Höfner violin bass, is now commonly referred to as the "Beatles Bass". For Beatles and other 60s sounds this is an absolutely compulsory addition to have!

  • Maple body
  • Set-in maple neck
  • Pau Ferro fingerboard
  • 2 Mini humbuckers (NYR in the neck position and NYT in the bridge position)
  • Nickel hardware
  • Pau Ferro Bridge
  • Nut width: 41.9 mm (1.65")
  • Scale: 77.4 cm (30.5")
  • Colour: Vintage Sunburst
  • Corresponding case: Article Nr #196950# (not included)
PROS
  • • Maple body delivers a focused, punchy tone characteristic of vintage basses.
  • • NYR/NYT humbuckers offer a surprisingly versatile range of sounds, from mellow to growly.
  • • Short scale (30.5 in) provides comfortable playability, especially for smaller hands or beginners.
  • • Pau Ferro fingerboard offers a smooth playing experience and a touch of warmth.
CONS
  • • Maple construction can sound a little 'boxy' without careful EQ adjustments.
  • • Limited tonal versatility compared to basses with more pickup options or active electronics.
  • • The shorter scale may feel cramped for bassists accustomed to longer scales.

Frequently Asked Questions

It captures the essence of the Höfner sound, but lacks the absolute airiness and unique resonance of the original – it's a very respectable approximation at a much more accessible price point.
Yes, the mini-humbucker design allows for relatively straightforward pickup swaps, though modifications may require some technical skill.
The neck profile is a classic 'C' shape, which is generally comfortable, but the shorter scale might feel a little snug for those with very large hands.
