The A-118 is a seriously useful little module for adding organic textures and subtle movement to your patches. It's a great starting point for anyone exploring noise generation in a modular environment, especially if you're into creating evolving soundscapes or generative sequences. The vintage edition's aesthetic is a nice touch, too.

Product Description

Doepfer A-118 Noise/Random Vintage Ed., Noise / Random Generator

Module A-118 is a noise and random voltage generator. The A-118 generates the signals white noise, coloured noise, and random voltage. Whilst white and coloured noise can be used both as an audio signal and as a control voltage (in conjunction with an S / H module), the generated random voltage is predominantly used as a control voltage because of the emphasis on the low frequency. The A-118 offers you the possibility to individually adjust the sound colours of the coloured noise by setting the red portion (low frequencies) and the blue portion (high frequencies) separately.

  • The course of the random voltage
  • which the rate of change and amplitude you can adjust
  • is indicated by two LEDs.
  • Vintage edition with black bezel
  • Width: 8HP / 40.3 mm
  • Depth: 40 mm (measured from the rear of the front plate)
  • Power requirements: 20 mA (12 V) / -10 mA (-12 V)
PROS
  • • Vintage black bezel adds a classic, understated aesthetic
  • • Color noise shaping offers nuanced textural possibilities
  • • Low-frequency random voltage is excellent for slow modulation
  • • Compact 8HP footprint ideal for dense modular setups
CONS
  • • Noise floor can be a bit prominent at higher output levels
  • • Limited output options compared to more complex noise generators
  • • Vintage edition components might exhibit slight inconsistencies

Frequently Asked Questions

The red/blue control offers a more precise shaping of the noise spectrum than simple high/low filters, allowing for smoother transitions and more unique tones.
While usable, the low-frequency emphasis makes it better suited for slow, evolving sequences rather than fast, precise rhythmic patterns.
You might experience slight variations in the noise characteristics or voltage ranges compared to newer production runs, adding a subtle vintage character.
