The A-115 is a workhorse divider for anyone wanting classic, thick sub-octave tones. It’s a no-frills module, but its simple design and reliable performance make it a staple for creating basslines and textures in techno, ambient, and experimental music. Perfect for those building a foundational modular system or expanding an existing one.

Product Description

Doepfer A-115, Audio Divider ModuleModule A-115 is a four-stage frequency divider. The frequency of a signal at the input is halved (half frequency = 1st suboctave), quartered (1/4 frequency = 2nd suboctave), etc. In this way, the DIVIDER generates four sub-octaves (F / 2 to F / 16).

At the output, the A-115 provides the sum mix of original and sub-octaves. You can adjust the amount (i.e., the amplitude) of the original signal and each sub-octave individually with an attenuator. The sub-octaves generated by the A-115 are symmetric square-wave signals. A sum mix of the four square-wave signals and the original signal is available at the output.

, Width: 8HP / 40.3 mm, Depth: 40 mm (measured from the rear of the front plate), Power requirements: 20 mA (12V) / -10 mA (-12V)

PROS
  • • Creates rich, symmetrical sub-octaves with a classic Doepfer square wave tone
  • • Individual attenuation allows precise blending of original and sub-octaves
  • • Compact 8HP footprint maximizes space in dense modular systems
  • • Simple, reliable design ensures consistent performance and longevity
CONS
  • • Limited to square wave sub-octaves; lacks harmonic complexity
  • • The 8HP width can be restrictive in smaller modular cases
  • • Power draw, while modest, adds up in larger systems

Frequently Asked Questions

The A-115 uses a digital divider, producing clean, symmetrical square waves, unlike VCOs which can introduce subtle variations and harmonic content.
Attenuation controls allow for level matching, but the inherent amplitude reduction with each division requires careful balancing for a smooth mix.
While primarily a divider, the individual attenuation controls and mix output can be modulated to create interesting rhythmic textures and evolving basslines.
