61 vs 88 keys

61 vs 88 keys: piano music needs 88, almost everything else fits in 61

If you're learning piano or play classical music, get 88 keys, ideally weighted. For pop, rock, worship, synth parts and producing, 61 keys cover almost everything, cost less and fit on a desk.

A full piano has 88 keys, a little over seven octaves. A 61-key keyboard has five octaves, enough for both hands in most pop, rock and worship music, synth parts and producing. What you lose: the lowest and highest notes, which classical piano music uses all the time.

Who should get which?

  • Piano students, classical players: 88 weighted keys. Your fingers learn the real touch (see weighted vs semi-weighted keys).
  • Pop and band keyboard players, singers who accompany themselves: 61 is fine; 76 or 88 if you play big two-handed piano parts.
  • Producers and synth players: 61 or fewer.

Questions

Can I learn piano on 61 keys?
You can start, but most piano books soon need more range. If piano is the goal, start on 88 weighted keys.

Is 76 keys a good compromise?
For keyboard players in bands, yes. They're rarer: Thomann had only 2 MIDI controllers with up to 76 keys.
