vs in-ears and headphones

In-ear monitors vs headphones: the stage wants in-ears, the studio wants headphones

On stage, in-ear monitors win: they block the band, protect your hearing and disappear on camera. For mixing, recording and long sessions at home, over-ear headphones are more comfortable and give a more natural picture.

In-ear monitors (IEMs) sit inside the ear canal and seal it, so they block outside sound and let you hear your mix at a lower, safer volume. That makes them the standard on stage. Over-ear headphones sit around the ear: more comfortable for hours, with a wider, more natural sound, which is why studios use them for recording and mixing.

Questions

Are in-ear monitors better than headphones?
On stage, yes. For mixing and long studio sessions, most engineers prefer over-ear headphones.

Can I mix on in-ear monitors?
You can check a mix on them, but over-ear headphones and speakers give a more reliable picture of the low end and stereo image.
