Acoustic drums are louder, feel exactly like drums because they are, and cost less at the entry level. Electric drums are quiet through headphones, take less space, record straight into a computer and offer hundreds of sounds, but the feel of cheap kits is a compromise. If you live in an apartment or share walls, electric is almost always the answer; if you have a garage or a basement and want to play with a band, acoustic is.
The price comparison surprises people. At Thomann in October 2026, the median electronic kit cost $2,248, more than twice the median complete acoustic kit at $1,012. At the beginner level they're close: a complete acoustic kit starts around $300, a complete electronic one around $280.

When to choose electric drums
Apartments, shared houses, late-night practice and home recording. A mesh-head kit is the minimum if the feel matters; rubber pads are fine for the first steps.
Yamaha DTX402K E-Drum Set, $388
A complete quiet beginner kit with 287 sounds and coaching programs. #2 of 81 electronic drumkits.
Alesis Nitro Max Kit Bundle, $537
Mesh heads at an entry price, for a feel closer to real drums. #3 of 81 electronic drumkits.
When to choose acoustic drums
A garage, a basement, a rehearsal room, or a band that plays loud. Nothing else teaches dynamics and touch the same way.
Pearl Roadshow 18" Matte Red, $851
A complete acoustic kit with hardware, a throne and Sabian cymbals, with a compact 18" bass drum that's a little easier on small rooms. #3 of 236 acoustic drumkits.
The in-between: an acoustic kit made quieter
Low-volume cymbals and mesh drumheads turn an acoustic kit into something you can play at home, with the real feel of stands, pedals and drums.
Zildjian L80 Low Volume 38 Box Set, $347
A hi-hat and crash/ride up to 80% quieter than regular cymbals. #9 of 162 cymbal sets.
Questions
Are electric drums good for beginners?
Yes, especially at home: they're quiet, they include a metronome and lessons, and you can play along with songs through headphones.
Is it easier to learn on electric or acoustic drums?
The basics are the same. Acoustic drums teach dynamics and touch better; electric drums let you practice more often, which usually matters more.
Are electric drums really quiet?
Through headphones the sound is silent, but you still hear the sticks on the pads and the kick pedal thumping, which can carry through floors.
