Product Description

Scala Vilagio F.H. G. Grancino Viola 1670, Viola

Giovanni Grancino was Milan's best-known violin maker, and his viola of 1670 is a somewhat smaller instrument with a floor length of 15.75''.

It is light, lies well in the hand and is easy to play even with delicate fingers.

  • Handmade in Germany by master luthier Florian Hertzsch
  • Despite its shorter length
  • this viola is just as wide as
  • for example
  • the 16.5'' standard model by Andrea Guarneri
  • Due to this enormous width
  • it sounds pleasantly full and round
  • Top made of alpine spruce
  • Back
  • sides and scroll made of flamed maple
  • Ebony fretboard
  • Rosewood fittings
  • Antique oil varnish with amber varnish from our own production according to the Italian model
  • Thin varnish layer for unhindered vibration of the woods
  • With traces of wear marks copied from old Italian violins
  • Final sound adjustment carried out via bridge and soundpost
  • Floor length: 402 mm / 15.75''
  • Bridge position: 217 mm
  • Neck length: 141 mm
  • Thomastik Dominant stringing
  • Incl. certificate and Jakob Winter viola case (51015 CAB)
PROS
  • • Exceptional projection despite its smaller body size.
  • • The alpine spruce top delivers a clear, responsive tone.
  • • Flamed maple back provides warmth and complexity to the sound.
  • • Rosewood fittings and antique varnish enhance aesthetic appeal and resonance.
CONS
  • • The shorter scale length might feel cramped for players with larger hands.
  • • Premium-priced, representing a significant investment for most musicians.
  • • Antique varnish, while beautiful, can be more delicate and require careful maintenance.
