This Roth & Junius Stroh is a fascinating, niche instrument. Its unique horn-like projection makes it perfect for folk, historical performance, or anyone seeking a truly distinctive sound—it's not a replacement for a standard violin, but a complementary voice. Expect a louder, more focused tone with a vintage character.

Product Description

Roth & Junius Stroh Violin New Edition 4/4, Stroh Violin

  • The Stroh violin is a combination of a violin and a trumpet that works according to the gramophone principle. The bridge stands on one side of a resonance membrane
  • which absorbs the vibrations of the bridge via a small metal pin. The resulting sound is then acoustically amplified in the trumpet bell.
  • Size: 4/4
  • Maple body and neck
  • Maple chinrest and shoulder rest
  • Ebony fingerboard
  • tailpiece and endpin
  • Rubner metal threaded tuners for clean fine tuning
  • Steel strings
  • Brass funnel
  • Includes bag
  • Made in Europe
PROS
  • • Solid maple construction provides a warm, resonant core tone.
  • • Rubner tuners offer exceptionally stable and precise tuning adjustments.
  • • The brass funnel delivers a uniquely projecting, almost 'megaphone' like sound.
  • • Ebony fingerboard and fittings contribute to a smooth playing experience and refined aesthetics.
CONS
  • • The instrument's weight, due to the brass funnel, can be tiring for extended playing.
  • • The Stroh violin's highly focused sound is less versatile than a standard acoustic.
  • • Steel strings, while bright, may require more frequent replacement compared to gut strings.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's significantly louder and more directional, lacking the broader, more diffused sound of a standard violin. The horn amplifies certain frequencies, creating a more metallic and 'projected' tone.
While playable, the Stroh's unique design and heavier build make it more suited to intermediate or advanced players who appreciate its specific character.
It excels in genres like historical performance, folk music, or experimental soundscapes where a distinctive, amplified sound is desired; it's not ideal for standard classical repertoire.
