The Rides In The Storm XDR is a surprisingly versatile little module for the price. Its dual ring modulation paths, combined with the high-pass filter, allow for creating really interesting, gnarly textures. It's a fantastic addition for experimental sound designers and anyone wanting to add some serious grit to their patch without needing a ton of space.

Product Description

  • Rides In The Storm XDR
  • Eurorack Module
  • Ring modulator with XOR and diode circuitry
  • Mix control for crossfading between both circuits
  • Y and CV mix inputs
  • High-pass filter with CV input for the XOR ring modulator or for external signals
  • Outputs for mix
  • XOR and diode ring modulator
  • Switchable noise generator with separate output
  • Offset switch for the Mix-CV input for use with envelopes or LFOs (0 V to +5 V / -5 V to +5 V)
  • Power requirement: 40 mA (+12 V) / 40 mA (-12 V)
  • Width: 4HP
  • Depth: 25 mm
PROS
  • • Dual ring modulation paths offer significantly expanded sonic possibilities.
  • • The XOR circuit delivers a particularly aggressive, metallic ring modulation tone.
  • • High-pass filter on the XOR path allows for sculpting complex, evolving textures.
  • • Compact 4HP footprint maximizes space efficiency in dense modular setups.
CONS
  • • Limited modulation input options restrict complex, dynamic control.
  • • Diode ring modulation can sound somewhat thin or 'fizzy' without careful mixing.
  • • Offset switch range (+5V/-5V) might be restrictive for some envelope shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions

The XOR circuit is far more aggressive and dissonant, producing a harsher, more metallic sound; the diode circuit is softer and more prone to 'fizzy' artifacts.
While not a direct FM synth, the XDR can produce some FM-esque timbres by carefully modulating the X and Y inputs with oscillators and using the mix control.
It allows you to shift the CV input range, making it easier to integrate with slower LFOs or envelopes for more subtle modulation effects.
