It’s a dependable workhorse for rock, blues, and classic tones, especially when paired with a 498T or 490T in the bridge. A great choice for players wanting a balanced, powerful neck tone without extreme output.

Product Description

Gibson 490R CC Humbucker Pickup, Pickups

The 490R and 490T pickups are the modern equivalents to the '57 Classic pickups. The 490s have a 4-wire connector cable with which different switching variants are possible (coil-split, serial, parallel).

The 490R and 490T have different spacings between the pins to provide better balance to the increasing string spacing towards the bridge. Both pickups feature vintage Alnico magnets. The 490R is installed in most Gibson guitars as the neck pickup, and is often combined with the 490T or 498T.

, Humbucker, Characteristics: Singing lead sounds, strong rhythm sounds, Colour: Chrome

Frequently Asked Questions

The 490R has higher output and a slightly more aggressive tone than the '57 Classic, while retaining a similar vintage Alnico II character.
Yes, the 4-wire design allows for straightforward coil splitting or serial/parallel wiring, but requires some basic soldering knowledge and wiring diagrams.
While versatile, the 490R's warmer tone might get lost in very high-gain, aggressive metal styles; it's best suited for rock and heavier blues.
