The A-136 is a fantastic little workhorse for adding grit and character to your modular patches. It's a great way to experiment with waveshaping and distortion, especially if you’re into creating evolving soundscapes or heavily processed tones – perfect for experimental sound design or adding edge to more conventional sounds.

Product Description

Doepfer A-136, Distortion / Waveshaper

The A-136 is a distortion and wavehaping module with extensive adjustment parameters. The input signal (audio- or control voltage), is first divided inside the module into 3 separate signal paths, which are mixed together at the output with adjustable gain (positive / negative)*:*

By way of all the various possible settings of the 5 parameters, very complex waveform distortions and modifications (waveshaping) are possible. The changes range from simple hard- or soft-clipping, to completely changed waveforms, in which the original input signal can no longer be recognised.

  • Positive component of the signal with adjustable clipping threshold (also externally); and gain / roll-off (+/-)
  • Negative component of the signal with adjustable clipping threshold (also externally); and gain / roll-off (+/-)
  • Original signal with adjustable gain / roll-off (+/-)
  • Inputs: Audio / CV In
  • ext. Clipping Level (+)
  • ext. Clipping Level (-)
  • Outputs: Audio / CV Out
  • Application examples: Audio distortion (can get especially interesting in conjunction with filters)
  • waveform manipulation for audio- and control signals (LFO
  • ADSR
  • random
  • etc.).
  • Width: 8 HP
  • Depth: 45 mm
  • Power requirement: +30 mA (+12V) / -10mA (-12V)
PROS
  • • Versatile waveshaping creates unique, evolving textures.
  • • Adjustable clipping thresholds offer subtle to extreme distortion.
  • • Three signal paths allow for complex, layered effects.
  • • Compact HP size maximizes utility within a modular system.
CONS
  • • Limited input headroom can cause clipping with strong signals.
  • • Parameter interaction can be unpredictable, requiring careful tweaking.
  • • No attenuators on controls; signal levels need careful management.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CV input modulates the positive clipping threshold, allowing for dynamic, rhythmic distortion effects. It’s not a direct control over the entire waveform, just the positive portion.
Absolutely. You can set the clipping thresholds manually and use it as a static distortion effect. Careful gain staging is essential to avoid unwanted clipping.
Unlike many single-stage distortion modules, the A-136's three signal paths and adjustable gain offer a much wider range of sonic possibilities, albeit with a steeper learning curve.
