The Doepfer A-124 Wasp Filter is a quirky, characterful module that delivers a distinct, gritty sound. It's a fantastic choice for sound designers and experimental musicians looking to add a touch of vintage edge and controlled chaos to their patches—it’s not a substitute for a clean, surgical filter, but a flavorful accent.

Product Description

Doepfer A-124 Wasp Filter, Wasp Filter

Module A-124 is a special 12 dB multimode filter using the "strange" filter circuit of the "EDP Wasp" (an analog synthesizer with black / yellow housing manufactured by the UK company "Electronic Dream Plant" at the end of the seventies). Hereby digital inverters would be 'misused' as analog operational amplifiers, leading to distortions and other "dirty" effects that generated the specific sound of this filter. The filter is equipped with a band pass output and a combined low / notch / high pass output. For this output a control knob controls the relation between the low and the high pass signal. If both signals appear at the same level (i.e. the middle position of the mix knob), one obtains a notch filter. Otherwise the low or high pass signal predominates.

, Special 12 dB multimode filter, Circuit design of the "EDP Wasp", Width: 8 HP, Depth: 45 mm, Power requirement: +30 mA (+12 V) / -10 mA (-12 V)

PROS
  • • Unique, aggressive filter character inspired by the Waspin synth
  • • Provides distinct distortion and 'dirty' sonic textures
  • • Offers bandpass and combined low/notch/highpass outputs for versatility
  • • Compact Eurorack module, ideal for tight modular setups
CONS
  • • Limited resonance control compared to more modern filter designs
  • • Can be noisy if gain staging isn't carefully managed
  • • The 'dirty' sound isn't for pristine, clean filter applications

Frequently Asked Questions

The digital inverters are repurposed as op-amps, introducing harmonic distortion and unexpected behavior that defines the Wasp Filter's unique sonic signature.
While capable of some subtlety, the Wasp Filter’s design leans towards more aggressive and distorted filtering – it’s best used for adding texture rather than gentle tonal shaping.
When the mix knob is centered, the low and high-pass signals are equally balanced, creating a true notch filter that attenuates frequencies around the cutoff point.
