The A-114 is a classic for a reason – it’s a wonderfully weird and characterful ring modulator. It’s perfect for sound designers and experimental musicians looking to add metallic textures, bell-like tones, or just plain chaos to their patches. It’s a relatively affordable entry point into the world of ring modulation.

Product Description

Doepfer A-114 Vintage Edition, Dual Ring Modulator

  • Module A-114 contains two separate ring modulators. A ring modulator outputs the product (multiplication X * Y) of the input signals X and Y. The difference to a VCA is that both input voltages can be positive and/ or negative while the product still has the correct algebraic sign on the output (4-quadrant multiplication). The VCA
  • on the other hand
  • allows only positive voltages for the control input (2-quadrant multiplication). The ring modulation is thus an amplitude modulation for both positive and negative input voltages. Ordinary amplitude modulation will output the original carrier frequency fC as well as the two side bands (fC - fM
  • fC + fM) for each of the spectral components of the carrier and modulation signals. Ring modulation however doesn't supply the carrier frequency. A ring modulator is used
  • for example
  • for producing bell-like sounds or for speech alienation.
  • Vintage edition with black front panel
  • Black front panel
  • Width: 4HP/ 20.0 mm
  • Depth: 40 mm (measured from the back of the front panel)
  • Power Requirements: +40 mA (+ 12V)/ -30 mA (-12V)
PROS
  • • Distinctive, clangorous ring modulation character for unique textures
  • • Vintage Edition offers a warmer, slightly less aggressive tone than newer versions
  • • Compact 4HP footprint makes it ideal for dense modular systems
  • • Dual ring modulators allow for complex modulation possibilities and stereo effects
CONS
  • • Can be difficult to tame, producing harsh or unpredictable results easily
  • • Limited input level adjustment; susceptible to clipping with strong signals
  • • Vintage components may exhibit slight variations in performance between units

Frequently Asked Questions

The Vintage Edition utilizes slightly different component tolerances, yielding a warmer, less digital-sounding ring modulation compared to more recent iterations.
Ring modulation, in general, is not always intuitive. Expect a learning curve to dial in usable sounds, but the potential for unique textures is substantial.
Yes, the A-114 operates on the standard +/-15V Eurorack power rails, so it's compatible with systems using +/-12V as well.
