Doepfer A-114, Dual Ring Modulator
- Module A-114 contains two separate ring modulators. A ring modulator supplies the product
- or multiplication ( X * Y) of the signals at the inputs X and Y at the output. The difference between a ring modulator and a VCA is that both input voltages can be positive and / or negative and the product will appear positive at the output (4-quadrant -Multiplication). The VCA
- on the other hand
- allows only positive voltages for the control input (2-quadrant multiplication). The ring modulation is thus an amplitude modulation amplified to positive and negative input voltages. On the frequency side
- the AM supplies both the carrier frequency fC as well as two side bands (fC-fM
- fCfM) per spectral component of the carrier and modulation signal. On the other hand
- the carrier frequency is missing in the output product during ring modulation. A ring modulator is used
- for example
- for producing bell-like sounds or for speech alienation.
