On November 3, 2026, Thomann had 146 acoustic double basses in stock, from $895 to $24,563. Half cost less than $2,849.
| Construction | Basses | Median price | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laminated plywood | 49 | $1,223 | $895 |
| Solid top, laminated back and sides | 19 | $2,074 | $1,525 |
| Solid wood throughout | 73 | $6,494 | $1,559 |
Laminated basses are tough: they handle changes in temperature and humidity, bumps in a van and outdoor gigs. That's why they're the usual choice for jazz clubs, rockabilly and school orchestras. A solid spruce top gives more resonance and volume for the money. Fully carved basses are for orchestra players and serious jazz players, and they need more care.
Sizes
| Size | Basses | Median price | For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/8 to 1/2 | 21 | about $1,500 to $1,900 | children |
| 3/4 | 82 | $2,849 | most adults |
| 4/4 | 20 | $7,896 | tall players, some orchestras |
The "standard" adult double bass is a 3/4. A 4/4 is rare and mostly found at the top of the price range.
Under $1,000: laminated and ready to play
Thomann 111BR 3/4, $891
Laminated basswood top, back and sides, a maple neck and an ebony fingerboard, about 10 kg, with a gig bag, a bow and rosin. Thomann's string workshop in Germany sets it up for the style you play, jazz, classical or rockabilly. #3 of 27 laminated plywood double basses.
Thomann's own brand has 57 of the 146 basses, including rockabilly basses in black, white and sparkle finishes from $895.
About $2,100: a solid top
Thomann 22 3/4 Europe, $2,110
A solid spruce top on an arched laminated maple back, Tyrolean tuners and a 105 cm scale, made in Europe. It's number one of five semi-solid basses in our ranking. #1 of 5 semi-solid double basses.
The fully solid version, the Thomann 44 Europe with a solid maple back, costs $2,905. Above that, workshop basses from Meister Rubner, Scala Vilagio and Master Bucur run from about $6,000 to $24,563.
Electric upright basses
NS Design NXT4a, $2,936
A slim electric upright with a pickup for both bowed and plucked playing, active output, and a stand and gig bag included. It's number one of 14 electric upright basses. #1 of 14 4-String electric double basses.
Electric uprights don't feed back on loud stages and fit in a car trunk. Thomann has 45, from $649. They don't sound like a carved bass played acoustically, but through an amp they get close enough for many bands.
What else to budget
A hard or padded bag if it isn't included, a bass stool, rosin and, for amplified gigs, a pickup: a laminated bass with a fitted pickup is the classic rockabilly and jazz club setup. Double bass strings are expensive, so they're worth choosing carefully once.
Where the numbers come from. Every acoustic double bass Thomann had in stock on November 3, 2026, from its partner feed, without bundles; electric upright basses are counted separately. Construction is read from Thomann's descriptions and categories; a few basses don't state it. Places are from our rankings. Prices are Thomann's US-dollar prices.
