1 vs 2 coils: the tone difference

Humbucker vs single coil: the hum, the bite and the guitar it comes in

A single coil is bright and clear but hums; a humbucker is two coils wired to cancel the hum, thicker and louder. P-90s sit in between. What each sounds like and which guitars use them.

A single-coil pickup has one coil of wire around its magnets: bright, clear and articulate, but it picks up electrical hum. A humbucker has two coils wired in opposite directions so the hum cancels out ("hum-bucking"); the result is thicker, warmer and louder, which suits distortion. The classic examples: a Fender Stratocaster has single coils, a Gibson Les Paul has humbuckers.

Neither is better. Single coils shine in clean, funk, blues and country sounds; humbuckers in rock, metal and jazz. Many guitars mix them, like the HSS Strat with a humbucker at the bridge.

The Phat Cat: a P-90 in a humbucker-sized housing, so it drops into a guitar routed for humbuckers. Punchy, with lots of upper mids. The highest-ranked P-90 in our index when we checked: #1 of 35 P-90 pickups.

Which should you choose?

  • Mostly clean, funk, blues, country: single coils.
  • Mostly rock with distortion, metal: humbuckers.
  • A bit of everything: an HSS guitar (a humbucker at the bridge, single coils elsewhere), or humbuckers with coil splitting.

Questions

Why do single-coil pickups hum?
A single coil works like an antenna and picks up electrical noise from lights, screens and power supplies. A humbucker's second coil, wound the other way, cancels that noise.

Can you put humbuckers in a Strat?
Yes, but routing may be needed. Easier options are "humbuckers in single-coil size", which fit standard Strat holes; Thomann lists 100 of them.

Are humbuckers better for metal?
Generally, yes: their higher output and lower noise suit high-gain distortion.
