What's the difference between a hand-hammered and a machine-spun kettle?

Hand-hammered kettles are often touted for their tonal complexity, but it's more marketing than reality. Machine-spun is perfectly fine if the copper gauge and construction are good. The quality of the hammering is more important than the method itself.

I'm playing in a smaller ensemble - do I really need multiple drums?

While a three-kettle setup is common, a four-kettle setup gives you significantly more flexibility in orchestration and allows for wider dynamic contrasts. It's a bigger investment, but worth it if you're serious about expanding your repertoire.

How important is the bowl finish?

The finish primarily affects the drum's appearance, not its tone. However, a poorly applied finish can dampen resonance, so look for a thin, even coating. Don't obsess over aesthetics - focus on the sound.

Can I upgrade individual components later?

Some components, like the pedal, can be upgraded. However, the bowl itself is essentially fixed to the kettle, so buying a quality drum from the start is crucial. Replacing a bowl is usually cost-prohibitive.

What's the deal with 'synthetic' heads?
