Tonewood

Expect solid wood construction (at least for the top), decent hardware, and reasonable intonation. The biggest trade-offs will be in the complexity of the tonewoods and the refinement of the finish - don't expect figured koa or a mirror-gloss finish.

Questions

What's the difference between a 'concert' and 'soprano' uke, and does it matter?

Sopranos are the smallest and have that classic, bright, almost toy-like tone. Concerts are slightly larger, offering a bit more low-end thump and a wider fret spacing, but can lose some of that signature soprano articulation.

Can I realistically mic a soprano uke for recording?

Absolutely. A small-diaphragm condenser mic positioned correctly can capture a surprisingly detailed and nuanced sound. Just be mindful of room acoustics; a little reverb can be nice, but too much will make it sound muddy.

What about pickups? Are they any good on ukes under $2000?

Most pickups at this level are decent, but don't expect boutique-level voicing. Piezo pickups are common, and you'll likely need to EQ them to tame some of the harshness. Some models incorporate USTs (under-saddle transducers) which can be a bit more natural-sounding.
