Frequently Asked Questions

Not strictly. Plenty of incredible metal has been made on 6-strings. But a 7-string unlocks a different level of low-end possibilities and opens up new creative avenues for riffing and soloing.
Drop A is the most common, but Drop B or even Drop G are gaining popularity. Experiment! Just be aware that lower tunings require heavier gauge strings and a more stable instrument.
