How to choose the best 5-String P-Basses
Neck Profile
A chunky, vintage P-Bass neck can be a real bear for smaller hands or players used to a thinner profile. Look for something with a more modern 'C' shape to ease the learning curve - it'll make those stretches a little less painful.
Action & Setup
High action (string height) on a 5-string is brutal. It makes the extra strings feel even more unwieldy. A well-setup bass with comfortable action is critical, especially when you're starting out.

Questions
Is a 5-string P-Bass harder to play than a 4-string?
Absolutely. The wider neck and increased string tension require more finger strength and dexterity. It's not insurmountable, but be prepared for a bit more of a workout.
Do I need a 5-string?
Not necessarily. A 4-string can do almost anything a 5-string can, especially when starting out. But if you're drawn to that extended low-end for slap bass or just want more versatility, go for it.
What about the string spacing?
String spacing on 5-strings is narrower than on many other 5-string designs. This can make it easier to play, but it can also make muting strings more challenging - a skill you'll develop over time.
Will a 5-string P-Bass sound different than a 4-string?
