5-String J-Basses by the numbers
Measured across all 128 models in this category, so «wide», «short» or «expensive» mean something you can check.
How to Choose the Best 5-String J-Basses
Pickup Voicing
Metal demands aggression. We're looking for pickups that deliver a thick, saturated low-end with plenty of upper-midrange bite, not just a muddy thump. Think aggressive articulation, not just low-end rumble.
Bridge and Hardware
A cheap bridge will kill your sustain and tuning stability. A solid, well-anchored bridge, preferably with through-body mounting, is crucial for transferring string vibrations and preventing unwanted resonances.
Neck Profile & Playability
Metal playing often involves fast, intricate lines. A comfortable neck profile (C, D, or even a more modern slim taper) that allows for effortless access to those high notes is essential. Low action without fret buzz is non-negotiable.
Electronics & Noise Floor
Metal amps are loud, and noise is the enemy. Clean preamps and well-shielded cavities are vital to minimizing hum and interference, especially when using high-gain pickups.
Body Wood & Construction
Alder is a safe bet for a balanced tone, but ash can add more bite and clarity. Solid body construction is a must; no pancake basses here - that cheap construction just won't handle the vibrations.
Buying Guide
Don't be fooled by flashy finishes or celebrity endorsements. A 5-string J-Bass for metal is an investment. Cheap basses often cut corners on hardware and electronics, leading to tuning instability and a noisy signal. Paying a bit more for quality hardware and a solid construction will save you headaches down the road - and make your life significantly easier in the studio and on stage.
How This List Is Built
We don't play these instruments — we're a catalog, not a review desk, and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise. This page covers 128 5-string j-basses from the Thomann catalogue, which is the largest single source of specification data in this category: 15 in detail, the rest listed with their specifications.
Position is computed, not curated. We parse the manufacturer's own description into actual values — nut width, scale, fret count, fingerboard radius, size, alloy — and rank on them: how many specifications a model has published, how many of them are measurable numbers, and how precisely it meets this page's criterion. A product image adds a little. Price is not a ranking signal: it tells you nothing about whether a neck fits your hand. The same inputs always produce the same order, so nothing here is shuffled to look fresh.
What this list is good for: narrowing a category down to a shortlist by spec and budget. What it isn't: a substitute for hearing an instrument. Before you buy, read hands-on reviews and, where you can, play it. Full methodology.
