The GK-3 is a solid upgrade for guitarists wanting to explore synth sounds. It's a relatively affordable entry point to Roland’s modeling ecosystem, though be prepared for some setup tweaking to minimize tracking issues. It’s perfect for players wanting a broader sonic palette without completely replacing their existing guitar.

Product Description

Roland GK-3, Hexa Phonic Pickup

This GK-Pickup is the improved version of the GK-2AH. The size of the control unit was reduced by 30%, all other improvements as follows

A GK-Pickup (GK-2AH or GK-3 for guitars, GK-2B for basses) or a GK-Ready-Guitar is required, to use Roland GK-Devices like VG-88, V-Bass, GR-33, GR-20 and GI-20

  • Adjustable curvature of the pickup to fit the fretboard radius of the guitar (to assure equal distance of the magnets to the strings)
  • Adjustable cable length between pickup stick and controll unit
  • Large jack socket (6.3mm) for feed in of standard pickups (short connection cable of the guitars jack socket to the socket of the controller is included)
  • Larger and more smooth running volume knob
  • New special fixture for single cut guitars
  • Including complete fixture set and mounting instructions
PROS
  • • Improved size and ergonomics over the GK-2AH
  • • Adjustable curvature accommodates various fretboard radii
  • • Larger jack socket simplifies connection to standard pickups
  • • New fixture expands compatibility with single-cut guitars
CONS
  • • Still requires a GK-Ready guitar or modification for installation
  • • Tracking can be susceptible to string noise and fret buzz
  • • Limited control over individual string synthesis parameters

Frequently Asked Questions

Installation involves attaching the pickup and control unit, potentially requiring routing or drilling depending on your guitar’s construction – a luthier is often recommended.
It's designed to work specifically with Roland GK-compatible devices like the VG-88 or GR-33; compatibility with third-party units is unlikely.
While latency is generally minimal, some perceptible delay can occur, especially with complex synth patches – it’s best to test with your specific setup.
