The DiMarzio Air is a seriously clever pickup. It nails that classic PAF neck tone – warm, harmonically rich, but with a surprising amount of articulation. It's perfect for players chasing vintage tones in a Les Paul or similar, especially those who want to avoid the often-muddied low-end of neck humbuckers.

Product Description

DiMarzio DP190 BK, Pickup

The DiMarzio DP190 Air provides Humbucker guitars with a clear and assertive neck pickup sound in the best old PAF tradition. It is rich in harmonies and assertiveness, yet warm and dynamic. Especially the "attack click" that often drowns in the mud with neck Humbuckers, remains audible here. Outstanding in combination with hot bridge pickups!

  • For electric guitar
  • Air classic
  • Humbucker
  • Vintage PAF sound with more detail
  • Greater dynamic due to a weak magnetic field
  • Great sustain
  • Suitable for neck position
  • Colour: Black
PROS
  • • Vintage PAF voicing with surprising clarity and detail.
  • • Excellent dynamic response, avoids the typical neck humbucker mud.
  • • Well-built with quality materials, typical DiMarzio consistency.
  • • Pairs exceptionally well with hotter bridge pickups for balanced tones.
CONS
  • • Lower output might be too tame for modern high-gain styles.
  • • Limited versatility; shines best in classic rock/blues contexts.
  • • Black finish may not suit all guitar aesthetics.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Air has a noticeably lower output than the '59 Model 2, offering a more nuanced and dynamic response, but less aggressive drive.
While it can handle some crunch, the Air’s lower output and vintage voicing aren't ideal for the high-gain demands of modern metal; a hotter pickup would be more appropriate.
It's designed to complement hotter bridge pickups, providing a balanced tonal spectrum, but you might need to adjust your volume levels to compensate.
