• and of course output volume control. History The inspiration behind VPA76 was designed by the German Institute of Broadcast Technology (IRT) and TAB started manufacturing it in the late 1950s. The unit was part of a series of similar devices but stood out among its contemporaries for its ability to provide extra gain and because of its 12-step gain selector (going from +3dB to +76). Each preamp carried its serial number on the front panel
